—- Tracy Chou

1 Corinthians 16:1-20
Paul shared words regarding collecting money for God’s people. He suggested Christians should be in a habit of setting aside money in proportion to their income for offerings. This offering could be in a form of love offerings for those who are in need, such as in this case for the poor Christians in Jerusalem. By setting aside money for offering, Christians are more apt to plan ahead and therefore less likely to give under compulsion. Gifts given in such manner were ready to be sent out when Paul arrived thereby relieving the urgent needs of their fellow believers in Jerusalem. This is a reminder to us not to drag our feet when it comes to sending aid to those who are in need.
Paul desires to spend time with the Corinthians. He was looking forward to being refreshed and perhaps provided for by the Corinthians for his next journey (v. 5-6). Like all good missionaries, he communicated his plans for his visit and for his missionary work in Ephesus. He committed his plans to the Lord when he said “… if the Lord permits” (v.7), recognized the opportunity to share the gospel – …“because a great door of effective work has opened to me” (v. 8), and at the same time he acknowledged the danger of his ministry. It is a reminder for Christians to show their support to missionaries in ways that will help to refresh them. Our fellowship, hospitality and financial support will help missionaries to face the challenges of their work. Reports from missionaries will help fellow Christians to know how to pray for them as well as what can be provided to meet their needs. Missionary reports can also be a testimony to the Lord – a reason for fellow Christians to rejoice.
Paul gave instructions to receive and affirm his aide and protege- Timothy (v.10-11). Young Christians who are rising to serve in church ministry need encouragement and guidance from their older mentor. How do we encourage our young men and women to serve? We can certainly commend them for their willingness to serve.
Paul appealed to the Corinthians to be on guard against spiritual dangers, stand firm in their faith, behave courageously, be strong, and to do everything in love. This command still rings true for us Christians today. Christians are being bombarded with temptations, distractions and daily depressing news. If we are not careful, we can lose focus of our finishing line, and forfeit our prize (crown). Feeding on the Word of God and fellowshipping with other believers are paramount in guarding ourselves from backsliding and maintaining our love for each other.
Paul urged the Corinthians to submit to those who devoted themselves to serving the saints. Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus probably traveled to meet Paul, bringing him the gifts from other believers, letters and encouragement. Their fellowship with Paul refreshed him and Paul wanted such people to be recognized. How true it is even today, many of us have experienced the service of our brothers and especially the sisters of our church who serve tirelessly in the kitchen. They have refreshed many of us without much recognition.
Lastly, Paul signed off his letter with a curse: “If anyone who does not love the Lord- a curse is on him”. Loving the Lord is the foundation of our obedience to His teachings. Let us love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind! —- Lai Yee Leong

—- Daisy Peng

—- Lusheng

Psalm 103:1-22
Bless the Lord, O My Soul – of David
In this Psalm, the Psalmist carries on a public dialogue with himself. He encourages himself to praise and by doing so, encourages others who see his example. May each of us praise the Lord as this Psalmist does – and be reminded of our Lord’s unfailing goodness.
As I prayed over this Psalm and what to share, God reminded me of the many attributes this Psalm declares about Him and this is what I have decided to share. May we all be encouraged by our Great God.
Vs 1: He is Holy – His NAME is Holy. Our God is high and lifted up. He is set apart from His creation. Our English word “holy” is from the same root word as “whole.” God is whole – perfect in goodness and righteousness. No one is like God. Even God’s holy angels tremble in reverent worship before Him. God sets apart His children for Himself and commands us to be holy as He is holy. Being holy makes you whole– what God intended you to be.
Vs 2: Forget not His benefits. He is our Provider – God provides for every creature He has made. He feeds the birds and gives us our daily bread. We do not have strength or goodness of our own but God gives it to us generously. He provides a way out of temptation and protects us from evil. God’s greatest gift is His Son. Because He gave us His Son, we can trust Him to give us everything else we need.
Vs 3: Forgives and Heals. He is Gracious – Grace is God’s kindness to those who do not deserve it. God is slow to anger and longs to forgive people. God’s grace in salvation reaches out powerfully to sinful people and makes them alive in Christ when they were dead in sin. God shows grace to all people. He gives life, families, sunshine, rain, music, talents, etc., as good gifts even to people who do not love Him.
Vs 4-5: Redeemer/Savior. God reaches down and rescues sinners from the penalty of death and hell that our sin deserves. We have no power to save ourselves from sin because we are dead in our sin. God has planned from eternity past to save His children fully from sin – from its penalty, power and presence. He sent His Son to live the perfect life we cannot live and die in our place for our sin. On the cross, Jesus satisfied God’s full wrath against our sin. Therefore, Jesus saves completely from the penalty of sin. God has no punishment left for His children. Jesus saves His children from sin’s power. He gives us new desires and a new ability to fight sin through the power of the Holy Spirit. One day, our Savior will free us from the presence of sin when we see Him face to face.
Vs 6-8: Righteous, Just, Merciful, Gracious. God is right in all He does. He always has been right and always will be right. All of His words and actions are right. All of His plans are right. God has no sin and is positively perfect. God never lies. He is fair, just and faithful in all He does. We never need to wonder whether God is right, so we can trust God when we do not understand. We do not always see God’s righteousness in the world today, but He has promised that His righteousness will prevail. Because God is righteous, He expects us to be righteous. Even the best person cannot be perfectly righteous. But God sees His children as clothed with Christ’s righteousness! God’s justice is perfect. His decisions are always based on His righteous character. God cannot ignore sin because He is holy. It would be unjust to ignore wickedness, rebellion and sin. God is just and does not show favoritism. Every penalty will be fair and right. God does not treat His children as their sins deserve because Jesus suffered the full punishment for our sins. Because God is just, He will never punish His children for the sin for which Jesus paid on the cross.
Vs 9-12: Just, Gracious, Loving, Merciful. God, in His mercy, does not give us what our sins deserve. He limits the extent of pain. He restrains evil and holds back sin. He makes His gospel known in places where people have turned their back on Him. God seeks those who are lost, alone, hurting and in need. He forgives and restores those who repent and turn to Him in faith.
Vs 13-14: Compassionate and Gracious – Immutable. God does not change. We can count on Him always to be holy, always to be good, always to be faithful, always to love us, always to hate sin. God’s Word is like Him; it does not change. We can count on His promises. Because God never changes, we can trust Him always.
Vs 15-18: Loving, Eternal, Righteous, Impartial. God saves people regardless of what they have done or will do. He saves people who have families in church and people who do not. He saves people who are rich and those who are poor. He saves people who are smart and those who are not smart. God always does what is right for every person and in every situation. There is nothing anyone can do to force God’s hand or to put God in their debt. No one will be able to blame God for His judgments.
Vs 19-22: The Sovereign Lord of Lords and King of Kings! God controls all things. There is nothing that is outside of God’s wise control, even the exact time and place for each person to live. No one tells God what to do. What God plans, happens. No event, no natural disaster, no person, not even Satan, can stop God’s plans. When God permits evil, we can trust He has planned to use it for His people’s good and His glory. God planned the time for His Son to come to earth the first time, and He has a time for His Son to return. God will accomplish His plan because He alone has power to do it.
This list is not exhaustive. There are many more attributes of our mighty God in these verses. What else do you see?
God is LOVE. God has always been love. Before He created the world the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit loved one another. God’s love never fails. God loves the world. He showed His love by sending His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as Savior. When we receive His Son as our Savior, we can love God. We can know His AMAZING attributes personally.
In Him – Mary Mauderer

—-Colley Han

1 Corinthians 11:1-34
vs. 2-16
Paul instructed the church in chapter 10 to conduct their worship together in a manner that glorifies God. When coming together as the church, the believer is not to put self above community. Paul now instructs the body that each person should remember their own respective heads, so that in showing respect to that authority, they might bring glory to God and edification to the body of Christ.
Women who would not dress appropriately in the gathering of the church would bring shame on their husbands. Rather, they were to conduct themselves in worship so that their husbands were honored. So also, men were to conduct themselves so that Christ would be honored.
vs. 17-34
Paul goes forward to call out the chaos of Corinth in their disunity and discord in the midst of the Lord’s Supper. The Supper is a symbol of unity and yet the believers were eating separate from each other. And in their meals, some were indulgent at the expense of others so that some left hungry, diminishing fellowship of the body. The importance of the meal is that it commemorates the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, it proclaims his death and work, and it unites the church under His leadership, love, and the hope of his future coming. Yet the church was denying the sacrifice of Christ by withholding love from each other. He instructs them therefore to take the Lord’s Supper seriously and to wait for each other.
Reflection
Although we live far away from the church of Corinth in time and place, these principles still hold true. God desires unity in His body. As His people we are called to display His unity through ours. Unity of the body demonstrates our union to Christ and the indwelling of the Spirit, and it is a profound symbol of God’s love as well as the unity in the Godhead. We cannot love God and bring shame and neglect upon our fellow believers. Our call is to lift up the humble, to strengthen the weak, and to serve the least of these. In this way we edify the body and bring glory to God. —- Nathan Williams

—- Mary Mei

—- Xin Jin

1 Corinthians 8:1-13
This a very short chapter, please take the time to read through.
I want to take up with V4. Paul is made aware that some of the followers in the church at Corinth are struggling with the meat from animals that was used in the offerings at the temples. It was the custom that some of the meat be served to priest and some was sold in the market. Paul states that to some there are many gods but to the believers, just the One true God. However, he says, not everyone believes this. Some think these idols are real, so when they make their offerings, they believe they are worshiping a true god.
So, was it ok for a follower of Christ to purchase and consume the meat from the idol temples? Yes, No, Maybe, Why and Why not? See Paul’s dilemma. In V8 he says we can’t really win God’s approval by what we eat, but we don’t lose any this if we don’t.
V9 is what I call Paul’s “punch line”, But you must be careful so that your freedom does not cause others with a weaker conscience to stumble. Paul wanted to make sure the more “mature” in Christ did not use their faith to create a stumbling block for the weaker or newer brother.
Today we are not dealing much with dietary issues in the church or pagan worship but we still have newer followers and people of different convictions. It may be in the way a person expresses themselves in worship, observing a holiday or fasting. I once heard someone discussing the observation of lent and remarked that they were free from such religious rituals. One the other hand, another Christian might believe they are now free in Christ to worship by fasting. We as Christians must learn to be sensitive to our brothers and sisters so our freedom does not offend. Remember that each of us can be at a different place in our journey and as Paul said, we work out our own salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in us for His good.
I sometimes think Paul should have ended this letter with the verses 1-3, but I’m not Paul. So, for our study today: Now regarding your question about food that has been offered to idols. Yes, we know that we have all knowledge about the issue. But while knowledge make us feel important, it is love that strengthens the church. Anyone that claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know a lot. But the person that loves God is the one whom God recognizes. Let’s spend our time strengthening the church! —- Bill Burgan
