I Samuel 16:1-23
The pages of the Old Testament are filled with the history of Israel. The kings, prophets and psalms of David. And within that history are lessons for our lives.
This weeks marks the completion of the first week of Lent. So I wanted to lace together this Old Testament story along with my Lent study.
Right away we see Samuel struggling with fear:
v2: “How can I go, Saul will kill me”
What happens, He is obedient to God, and there is no danger.
v5: “Yes, I come in peace.
Next lets jump down to Saul and his troubled spirit.
v14: ” The spirit of the Lord departed him and another spirit was sent to torment him.
For what ever reason, God’s present had departed from Saul. Anyone every feel that way. In the dark, like God left the room.
How did Saul find his way back ? Worship!
v23: When David played form him, he found relief or refuge.
Anytime we find ourselves removed from his presence , we should make sure we are being obedient in our worship and praise of God!
Hold on, one more thing – v7: … the Lord said to Samuel.
“Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
How bold and how true and we all have been guilty of this.
I have a dear friend that has had a calling on his life for many years As a young man in the 1970-80s he had a large tent. With that tent and a caravan of trucks, trailers, buses and campers her traversed America (and eventually the globe). That were sort of a rag tag bunch, shall we say, not much to look at . . . But God looks on the heart.
Through this man and his teams, thousands of people have heard the gospel and come to know Jesus This man was like Samuel , but he too was obedient. He went out in peace and God was with him.
Let us pray that today we will not be fearful, but obedient.
When we fill removed from God, let’s remember to worship and praise
and not to look on the appearance, God sees the heart and intentions of others.
IN HIM
