1 Peter 2:1-25

V1-3

Our spiritual growth is dependent on the spiritual food that we consume. Like newborn babies, we should crave the spiritual milk that will cultivate us, which is the word of God. Then we will grow in spiritual maturity just as a baby grows when it is continually nourished. Some kinds of food that aren’t good for our spiritual health are malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander (verse 1).

V4-10

We will continue to be built up spiritually as we keep seeking the spiritual food that will bring us closer to God. Unlike those who are non-believers, who “stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do”, we are an elect people and our purpose is to proclaim God’s excellence (v8-9). Unlike before, we are now God’s people who have received His mercy, so we are new creations born again. Our spiritual maturation is directly proportional to how much we seek and consume the spiritual food and word of God. 

At the time, Christians were already viewed suspiciously by society. Peter is urging Christians to remain honorable around others to glorify God (v12). He asks them to do this by obeying the government, of course, until the law causes one to go against the word of God. It is important for us to obey the laws of our land, because God commands it so. In verse 14, we are told that the authorities are “sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good”. Yes, our government may not always do what we wish, but our duty is to submit to those who were placed by God.

However, Peter also reminds us of the suffering that we may endure as a result of even our good deeds and how in doing so, we follow the example set to us by Christ. Jesus never sinned yet suffered on the cross and put his trust in God. There are many places in the Bible where we are promised future glory and a perfect life with Jesus in heaven, but for now, we must endure the suffering that is imposed on us as Christians who are set apart from the rest of the world. 

Romans 8:13 

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Enduring the brief suffering of this world is honorable in the eyes of the Lord, and it is our calling to entrust ourselves to and to have faith in God, just as Jesus did on the cross.          —- Cecilia Yip

彼得前书1:1-25

关于使徒彼得,天主教以他为首任教皇。而西方民间,更流行一种完全令人啼笑皆非的说法,我称之为“把门神学”,说圣彼得是天堂把门的,人要进入天堂,首先要在天堂大门碰上圣彼得,他会问理由,理由充分了才开门让进云云。由此可见,贴上“神学”标签的说法五花八门,但唯有圣经sola Scriptura带领我们进入正确的神学。我想在此分享线上各位,都不会把民间的无知闲话当真。
我们回到圣经《彼得前书》,细看神的话语中这位使徒彼得。

彼得是主耶稣十二使徒之一,跟随主耶稣三年半。在犹太人宗教贵族们眼中,他不过“原是没有学问的小民”,但紧接着,“认明他们是跟过耶稣的。”(徒3:13)。宗教贵族也真愚笨得叫人喷饭:跟随复活的基督三年半之久的,还说他们没有学问?一边歇着去吧。

彼得前书反映出使徒彼得不但很有学问,而且是一位了不起的神学家。他自我介绍为“耶稣基督的使徒”(使徒就是被差遣之人),写信给散居在小亚细亚各地的基督徒。在第二节,他定义基督徒“就是照父神的先见被拣选,借着圣灵得成圣洁,以致顺服耶稣基督,又蒙他血所洒的人。” 开门见山地用简单、扼要的一节经文区区几句话,就把圣经的基要真理如三一神论、神的拣选、基督耶稣的献祭、宝血永远的洁净大能、以及圣徒的生命本质等等,作了精确的归纳。
耶稣基督的学校所培养的,绝对是属天的精英,地上的贵族们所不能想像、不能明白的。想要成为一位属天精英吗?你有福了,这是神的心意,请以谦卑的心和追求的灵,报名参加耶稣基督的学校——渴慕圣经的话语。

从罪人到圣徒,人没有丝毫功德,完全是、绝对是、百分之百是神的恩典和怜悯。既然完全是神的作为,神完全为他自己的拣选负责。3-9节原文是一句话。由赞美开始,彼得列举出神当受他子民赞美的原因。因他的怜悯:

  • 我们藉着耶稣基督得重生,这属天的新生命带来“活泼的盼望”。活泼的,原文“生机勃勃的”。(3)
  • 不同于任何形式属土的生命,这生机勃勃新生命,盼望的是“可以得着不能朽坏,不能玷污,不能衰残,为你们,被赐给新生命的人,存留在天上的基业。”(4)华人阔佬们能聚财,可惜聚来的财富,每每叫子嗣为之相争,最后为着几斤铜臭,谋财害命有之者,对簿公堂有之者,大打出手有之者,兄弟阋墙有之者…… 值得吗?子曰:君子之泽,五世而斩。既如此,争之何益?等候神赐下天上的基业才是正经。
  • 新生命再不是属土的自生自灭。而是“蒙神能力保守”的永恒生命。无任何人、鬼、物、外力,能够摧残在神能力荫蔽下的蒙福生命,这生命永远生机勃勃,往“得着所预备,到末世要显现的救恩”勇往直前。(5)

*  问题:不是说基督徒得救了吗?为何这里还说是要得着救恩?原来,我们眼下的救恩,是在一种神学家们称为“已经但犹未”(already but not yet)的状态。我们从信主的一刻开始,已经得着父神在创造世界之前已经为我们准备的救恩(参约3:1-8;弗1:4,彼前1:2),period。不过我们仍然处在一个阶段,“等候得着儿子的名分,乃是我们的身体得赎。”(罗8:23)待到教会和圣徒被提(raptured),在基督里的活人和复活的圣徒,都穿上不朽坏的荣耀身体,“这必朽坏的既变成不朽坏的。这必死的既变成不死的。那时经上所记,死被得胜吞灭的话就应验了。”(林前15:54)这应该就是彼得陈述的“到末世要显现的救恩”——身体得赎。

圣徒因此有难以名状的大喜乐,但,我们完全不否认经常面临“百般的试炼”,并为此忧愁。
牧者彼得告诉我们一个奥秘:这忧愁是暂时的。(6)从义人挪亚至今,神安排他的子民经历试炼和忧愁(所以不要理会各种诸如“信耶稣我保你心想事成健康长命事业成功财源广进百子千孙养尊处优吃香喝辣……”等等荒诞)。
连三一神第二位格神的儿子,被立承受万有、创造诸世界,并常用他权能的命令托住万有的耶稣基督,都必须经历百般的试炼,因受苦难得以完全。参来1-2章。
彼得解释,经受百般的试炼,神的心意是 “叫你们的信心既被试验,就比那被火试验,仍然能坏的金子,更显宝贵。可以在耶稣基督显现的时候,得着称赞,荣耀,尊贵。”(7)
我个人极钟爱的诗歌《古旧十架》,回应彼得的教导说:“此十架可换公义冠冕。”阿门。

彼得称许教会(8)说,弟兄姊妹没有见过主,但却爱主。
本来,百般试炼中,世人的自然反应该是怨声载道,但圣徒与世人截然不同。面对试炼,在暂时忧愁中,他们在灵里依然“因信他就有说不出来,满有荣光的大喜乐”,因为,圣徒爱主。主耶稣是我们的样式。当他“在诸城中行了许多异能,那些城的人终不悔改”,事奉不见得有甚果效,他没有抱怨,而是“耶稣被圣灵感动就欢乐”,作出“……父阿,是的,因为你的美意本是如此。”(太11;路10)的赞美。得着救恩、跟从基督的人是蒙福的(8)。彼得告诉熟知旧约的犹太基督徒:

  • 救恩经过众先知“早已详细的寻求考察”,是具有绝对权威的结论(10)
  • 他们靠圣灵预言、预表(预先证明)“基督受苦难,后来得荣耀”(11),鼓励弟兄姊妹效法基督,在百般试炼中定睛在将要到来的荣耀
  • 古时候先知得到启示所传讲的讯息,是为今天藉着受试炼而终将要得荣耀的新约圣徒,而新约传福音的使徒包括彼得自己,也被圣灵差派,将这好消息向他们报说;这当中最特别的一群是众天使。犹太传统天使具有尊贵的身份(来1:4),天使参与了律法的颁布(加3:19);神甚至差遣天使,在末日大灾难中与两位见证人一道向世人传福音(启14:6),但,虽然救恩的对象人比天使微小一点,(来1:7)但救恩并不包括更有能力的堕落天使(来2:16)。彼得从旧约先知、新约使徒、以及服役的灵天使三方面,证实救恩的无比确切(12),以此鼓励教会谨慎自守,在盼望中等候主耶稣的显现。(13)

有这救恩的确据,彼得劝勉教会在等候中,不要灰心,灰心会让人放弃,放弃导致另寻出路。彼得与他的兄弟们就曾因为灰心而重操旧业打鱼去,在这里,他似乎以自己的经历,鼓励教会谨守自己,不放纵私欲,活出圣洁的新生样式,译为他们所等候的主耶稣是圣洁的(14-16)。
而新生的样式有一个显著的标记:彼此相爱(22)。彼得强调说,让圣徒得重生的,“不是由于能坏的种子,乃是由于不能坏的种子,是借着神活泼常存的道。”(23)既如此,彼此相爱就是这种子当结的果子。

神所预知、拣选的人有福了。24节引自以赛亚书40:6-8,比对出两种生命的结局。我们的生命是出于不能朽坏的种子(对救恩将信将疑、摇摆不定的人当紧抓这一板上钉钉的事实,因为这是圣经的应许);而世人属土的生命,无论活得多瑰丽,也逃不脱枯干、凋谢。(25)

一点心得,何妨与列位分享:初信主时,教会助道会的顾问是一位年长的女传道人,笑语盈盈,慈祥关爱。她是我决志后第二天打电话给我作跟进的人。从她手上,我接过毕生第一本金枝玉页:圣经。后来我到美国留学,差不多十五年后回香港探亲,坐在交通车上,惊鸿一瞥,看见她健步前行,笑眯眯的满脸从生命中流露慈祥关爱,与十五年前的形象,丝毫不改。我当天写下《老传道人》一篇。各位有暇,短文在此。https://theemptyvalley202005.blogspot.com/2020/07/blog-post.html

雅各書5:1-20

我一直以來都很糾結。
糾結是否為了更好的工作、更好的待遇、更好的生活環境而去禱告是一件錯誤的事情。

但我相信,我並不會是唯一有這樣想法的人。想要為自己的現況來向神求,卻又不敢說得很具體,因為不知道自己是否能夠清楚地不帶著為了物質的心態去求而導致得罪神,又或是怕這樣的想法會引來他人的指責。

在這邊,我想分享根據雅各書五章所體驗到的一些想法,我覺得很受用。

首先,鼓勵正在困苦中的弟兄姊妹們。
「你們看那天上的飛鳥,也不種,也不收,也不積蓄在倉裡,你們的天父尚且養活他。你們不比飛鳥貴重得多麼?」(馬太福音6:26)
「弟兄們哪,你們要忍耐,直到主來。看哪,農夫忍耐等候地裡寶貴的出產,直到得了秋雨春雨。」(7節)
「那先前忍耐的人,我們稱他們是有福的。」(11節a)

神對我們每一個人都有不同的計畫,我們確定會擁有永恆的生命和罪惡的救贖。至於在世上,忍耐並等候,神必會用不同的方式來賜福給聽祂話語並遵行祂話語的人。這是神所應許的。也許不是我們所期待的方式,但神絕對會賜給我們每天所必要的一切。所以各位,別再哀聲嘆氣、杞人憂天了,以免得受審判啊!「弟兄們,你們不要彼此埋怨,免得受審判。」(9節a)

現在換講另一方面,17-18節寫著:「以利亞與我們是一樣性情的人,他懇切禱告,求不要下雨,雨就三年零六個月不下在地上。他又禱告,天就降下雨來,地也生出土產。」以利亞具體的為了乾旱來禱告,神就使雨降下來,農作物能夠生長,人民的生計也都能夠維持,生活也可以脫離困苦。這邊可以看到,神也是會聽為了物質需求的禱告。

所以我相信,基督徒是可以為著更好的工作、更好的待遇、和更好的生活環境去禱告。
但是!重點是求這些東西的目的和初衷是什麼。是為了要享受榮華富貴和放飛自我 (live in luxury and self-indulgence – verse 5),或是同時有著惡待你的下屬或員工又或是佔他們便宜的行為? (failed to pay the workers – verse 4) 若這些是心中藏著不為人知的私慾,這邊寫得很清楚,那就等著苦難來到你們身上吧!
「嗐!你們這些富足人哪,應當哭泣、號咷,因為將有苦難臨到你們身上。(1節) 神必定不會放過這樣的富人的。「我又告訴你們,駱駝穿過針的眼,比財主進神的國還容易呢!」(馬太福音19:24)

身為基督徒,與其去想富足或是貧窮,不如去把心懷意念放在最後兩節所說的:
「我的弟兄們,你們中間若有失迷真道的,有人使他回轉,這人該知道:叫一個罪人從迷路上轉回便是救一個靈魂不死,並且遮蓋許多的罪。」(19-20節)
讓我們重複思想、溫習並實行,到底基督徒的呼召是什麼。
不就應該是把耶穌救贖的福音傳到地極,使更多的人成為祂的門徒,使更多喪失的靈魂得救嗎?              —- Bob Liu

James 3:1-18

As a mother of two boys, I’ve to be conscious of what I teach my boys as they are good at getting at me for not doing what I preached. As the saying goes, you have to “walk the talk” to convince the people whom you are preaching to. Likewise, teachers are also judged for their behavior and action. As such they are held to a higher standard. Their words and actions can either lead someone to life or astray.

The human tongue could wield its power for good or evil. Though just a small part of the body, the tongue is capable of inciting war and peace. As Christians, all of our body parts are to be set apart, holy to God. That means we are to control our tongue so that it will not be engaged in gossiping, demeaning, blaspheming, crude joking, lying, flattering, back- biting, boasting, exaggerating, just to name a few.  Are Christians to “murder” people with their mouth on Monday through Saturday and sing praises to God on Sundays? James said “this should not be”. We are called not to grieve the Holy Spirit with unwholesome talk. Our speech should be geared to building up others, not tearing them down (Ephesians 4:29).

There are 2 kinds of wisdoms: heavenly wisdom and worldly wisdom. True wisdom is heavenly wisdom as reflected in the one whose good deeds are done in humility. It is opposite from the bitter envy and selfish ambition of the worldly wisdom from the devil. How easy it is for Christians to be drawn into the worldly wisdom if we are not careful. We will be so caught up with comparing ourselves with others, that our focus becomes “I” rather than on God. In this competitive world we live in, we ought to be asking ourselves “what are we striving for ultimately?” Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters- Col 3:23 is one of my Christian brothers’ motto. It is the Christians’ goal to pursue heavenly wisdom for it is pure, peace- loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, good fruit, impartial and sincere. All these virtues will reap a harvest of righteousness to the glory of God!

 

James 4:1-17

Once again, we have to address the ulterior motive of our living. What is the cause of our fights and quarrels? Is our motive right before God? If “yes”, do we ask God for the things we desire and trust that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Rom 8:28)? When we humble ourselves before God and genuinely grieve over our sins, when we choose to obey God and resist the devil, when we are committed to living a pure life for Him, we are choosing God over our friendship with the world. To live otherwise is like living in an adulterous relationship with God. God is jealous for us (v. 5), He cares and is concerned for us. He extends grace to those who yield to Him and He lifts them up.

Our love for God embodies our love for each other. If we cannot love our neighbor whom we can see, how can we love God whom we have not seen (1 John 4:20)? Our love for God should be overflowed to loving people for it is written in God’s commandments. We should therefore use our words to build up our neighbors and not to destroy them.

God who is the lawgiver is also our maker. He knows how many hairs we have on our head as well as the number of days of our lives; therefore whatever we plan in our lives, we ought to put God in the center of it. Acknowledging God’s control over our lives help us to put things in perspective: Enjoying God and glorifying Him is the purpose of our lives.             —- Lai Yee Leong

雅各書2:1-26

好奇妙,我們讀雅各書是緊接在羅馬書之後。
羅馬書的信息說:「稱義不是用立功之法,乃是用信主之法」,蒙神拯救「既是出於恩典,就不在乎行為」。這讓基督徒謙卑的來到主前,因為沒有誰可以誇口以自己的品格為義、為善。然而,
雅各書的信息卻說:「信心若沒有行為就是死的」。(雅2:17, 26)
乍讀之下,有些愕然,「莫非聖經自相矛盾?」但再細心研讀,便明白了聖經是何等寶貴的真理。

首先我們確定,人不可能靠著自己的品格行為稱義,人之所以能得救,完全是因為神的恩典。人只要,也只有、只能相信神,相信主耶穌基督的救贖,就可以得救。
而一個蒙恩得救的人,就會得永生,會在基督裡得新生命,成為新造的人,舊事已過都變成新的了。如何知道呢?
耶穌說:你們要結出果子來,與悔改的心相稱。(太3:8、路3:8)使徒保羅也提醒:你們行事為人與基督的福音相稱。(腓1:27)新生命是會活出果子來的,是讓人可以看見的,也就是會有外顯的言語行為。隨著信心的成長,靈命的健全,心意更新而變化,願意體貼神的心意,願意以基督耶穌的心為心,就會有相稱的行為外顯。

雅各在本章指出普遍教會的兩個錯誤行為,因而他們的信心被質疑。
其一,當世的教會按著外貌待人,嫌貧愛富,高捧財主權貴,貶抑貧窮卑賤,這完全違背了神的旨意。更嚴厲的說,v9你們若按外貌待人,便是犯罪,被律法定為犯法的。
這樣的情況基本上也存在在現今的教會或基督徒之間,或許在本意上並不是出於嫌貧愛富,而是對有成就的人的敬佩,或是願意學習那人的成功之道,但如果心中輕蔑平凡或軟弱、貧困的人,那就失去基督徒應有的生命見證。
事實上許多有成就的基督徒,更是謙卑的,更是「存心謙卑,各人看別人比自己強。」(腓2:3)

其二,許多基督徒把信心掛在嘴邊,卻沒有關愛弟兄姊妹的實際行動。雅各舉了實例說,「若是弟兄或是姐妹,赤身露體,又缺了日用的飲食;你們中間有人對他們說:『平平安安地去吧!願你們穿得暖,喫得飽』;卻不給他們身體所需用的,這有甚麼益處呢?」
於是雅各教訓我們,v17信心若沒有行為就是死的。甚至在19, 20節告訴我們,「你信神只有一位,你信的不錯;鬼魔也信,卻是戰驚。虛浮的人哪,你願意知道沒有行為的信心是死的麼?」

雅各書不是在反對羅馬書的教訓,乃是在補充說明,信心是回應神的真理的心志,而信心是表顯在信服與信從的行動。
行為不能使人得救,不能讓人稱義,唯有信心;而行為是信心活出來的果子。
求主幫助我們,以基督耶穌的心為心,俯就卑微,遵行天父上帝的旨意。

 

詩篇87:1-7;93:1-5

詩篇87篇論到錫安,就是耶路撒冷,乃是神的城。
我們都是屬神的兒女,是神家中的人,是住在神的城裡的人,住在神的城裡,就是住在神裡面,就是與神同在。
這城是神為我們設立的保障,是我們的高台,是我們的平安,是我們享受豐盛生命的所在。
感謝神,我們當稱謝進入祂的門,當讚美進入祂的院;當感謝祂,稱頌祂的名。(詩100:4)不單是我們在其中享有錫安的福分,也讓我們在城裡生養眾多──教養兒女,領人歸主,同享主恩鴻福。

詩篇93篇是我們面對艱險環境時的禱告。
疫情嚴峻,其勢有如波浪澎湃,大水揚起,大水發聲,以致人心惶惶。
但我們是何等有福,因為萬有的神是我們的主,
祂的寶座從太初立定,祂從亙古就有。
祂在高處大有能力,勝過諸水的響聲,洋海的大浪,我們既是住在神的城裡,便沒有恐懼疑慮,祂必定保守我們。感謝讚美主!阿們。         —- Solomon Liu

雅各書1:1-27

雅各書的作者是耶穌的弟弟雅各,起初他並不相信耶穌是神的兒子,後來親眼所見、親身經歷,不但相信了耶穌是基督,是神的兒子,是拯救世人的救主,並且與使徒們同工,成為初世紀耶路撒冷教會的領袖。使徒行傳15章的耶路撒冷大會就是由雅各主持,作最終的結論與裁示。

雅各雖是耶穌基督的弟弟,卻謙卑的以「主耶穌基督的僕人」自居。本書是寫給散居各地的猶太人/以色列人基督徒的信。我們相信聖經的內容都是神所啟示的真理話語,都是向普世基督徒說的話。

雅各一開始就提醒說,v2基督徒會落在百般的試煉中。是的,因為當始祖犯了罪,與神隔絕,罪就入了世界,成為世界的王,世界就會恨神、恨基督,也會恨基督徒。如今我們真實的看見這世界已然悖離了神的真道,與神為敵。許多歐美國家原是「基督教立國」的國家,如今遠離了神的真道,以致基督徒在這個世代堅守主的真道,就會被這世代攻擊,這是主耶穌基督在論末後的日子時的教訓。(太24:9、可13:9、路21:12-17、約15:19)
雅各在此提醒我們將會面對世界的攻擊,也就是對我們信心的試探,但他接著勉勵我們說,「你們落在百般試煉中,都要以為大喜樂;3 因為知道你們的信心經過試驗,就生忍耐。4 但忍耐也當成功,使你們成全、完備,毫無缺欠。」這正是神對基督徒的要求──要像神的聖潔,要像神的完全,就是聖潔沒有玷污的。

做得到嗎?
如果在對耶穌基督的信仰上心懷二意,在一切所行的路上都沒有定見,心存疑惑的人,就像海中的波浪,被風吹動翻騰。這樣的人不要想從主那裏得甚麼。(1:6-8)
那該如何做?
若有缺少智慧的,應當求那厚賜與眾人、也不斥責人的神,主就必賜給他。只要憑著信心求,一點不疑惑。(1:5, 6)就是要憑著信心向神求智慧,能分辨世界的虛偽與悖道;憑著信心向神求能力,能勝過世界的引誘與攻擊。
有什麼結果?
v12忍受試探的人是有福的,因為他經過試驗以後,必得生命的冠冕,這是主應許給那些愛他之人的。忍受的意思是在任何環境情況下仍要堅守信仰、堅定信心。

堅守信仰、堅定信心,就是「行道」。使徒保羅說:「信道是從聽道來的,聽道是從基督的話來的。」雅各在這裡教導我們:v22-24「只是你們要行道,不要單單聽道,自己欺哄自己。因為聽道而不行道的,就像人對著鏡子看自己本來的面目,看見,走後,隨即忘了他的相貌如何。」
我們讀了主的道,聽了主的話,就相信了主的真理,這還不夠,還要遵行主的話、主的真理,就是要行道。所以,聽道而信道而行道,這就是基督徒的生命。
我們學了主的道,固然是要傳給人,與人分享,但最重要的是活出主的道,就是行道,是信仰生命的流露,成為主耶穌基督的見證人。
雅各勉勵我們:v25這人既不是聽了(道)就忘,乃是實在行出來,就在他所行的事上必然得福。

本章裡有好多要學習的、要操練的教訓,求主幫助我能生命進步──
v14各人被試探,乃是被自己的私慾牽引誘惑的。
v19要快快地聽,慢慢地說,慢慢地動怒,20因為人的怒氣並不成就神的義。
v26若有人自以為虔誠,卻不勒住他的舌頭,反欺哄自己的心,這人的虔誠是虛的。
主啊,我禱告祈求,幫助我守住那清潔沒有玷污的虔誠,保守自己不沾染世俗。奉主耶穌基督的名,阿們。         —- Solomon Liu

Romans 16:1-27

V1-16

Paul sends his greetings and final instructions to the church of Rome.

Some important things to note about Paul’s extensive greetings are that they are very personal and are addressed to many different kinds of people that he knows in the church of Rome. From verse 3-16, Paul mentions both women and men who have served the church and we also know that this is a diverse group of people.

Phoebe, mentioned in verse 1, is likely the one delivering Paul’s message and is called a “servant of the church”, also meaning deaconess. Paul greatly commends her, a woman, and goes on to recognize many other faithful women who served in the church as well. Also mentioned are Prisca (also known as Priscilla) and Aquila, who we know from Acts 18 as a Jewish couple who came from Italy and accompanied Paul to Ephesus. Additionally, there are others mentioned who are Gentiles.

So, rather than just reading a bunch of names, we can learn that the church of Rome consisted of different genders, origins, and races and that Paul’s greetings encourage the development of strong, personal connections between people in the church — which ultimately promote a unified community in Christ.

V17-20

In verse 17, Paul’s final instruction is to avoid people “who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine”. These are people who preach heresy to others. It is important that we remain alert so that we can recognize when someone is doing or saying something contrary to what we know is the truth. This is because in verse 18, we see that these people don’t serve Christ, but are trying to serve themselves “and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve”.

There are many who preach things that people want to hear while targeting a specific, simple-minded audience: “believe in God and you’ll go to heaven, you’ll become rich, you’ll never go to Hell, etc…” Just the same, there are many people who are naïve and easily deceived by those flattering lies. That’s why Paul sends this reminder to the church of Rome, so that they can be “wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil” (verse 19).

V25-27

Paul wraps up his letter by proclaiming God’s power through the truth of the gospel, which was made to known to all, not just the Jews, “to bring about the obedience of faith”. This ties in directly to the opening of Romans in Chapter 1:1-5 and nicely brings the letter to a close as he finally concludes with the praise of the only wise God.          —- Cecilia Yip

罗马书15:1-33

进入罗马书15章之前,我们不妨回顾一下至今学习过的内容。

罗1-11章是我们蒙恩的总汇记录。……在神忿怒之下的罪人,藉着耶稣基督被饶恕,得新生,被神接纳而成为神的儿女。不但不被定罪,更因信称义,跟随主走永恒生命的路得荣耀。
12章开始,一连五章,保罗列举我们对赐恩典的神理所当然的回应。从1到11章神的恩赐与12章到16章人的回应,可以看见一幅爱的完美画图:神先爱我们,我们以爱回应他。有福了,神所称为义的人!

罗15:1-8是14章的继续,不但15:1与14:23之间原文有可译作 “但” 的连接词de.,而且两处有针对同样话题的教导。注意,圣经没有废话。两处教导看似相同,但决不表示保罗 “人老话多”。如果仔细参详,我们看见15:1-2是在14:1的基础上更加深入的耳提面命。从14:1的 “接纳” 和 “不要辩论” 中,读者可能的得着的印象是:得,那俺待一边洗洗睡了好了,惹不起还躲不起吗?其实心中还是不怎么感冒那些软弱的。哼!俺可比你强多了。也许还偷着埋怨:咱教会,咋就摊上这么些软弱的呢?

听圣经道来。

真理是:教会中没有不软弱的。没有软弱的教会在启示录第四章,那是被提的教会。连保罗自己也对哥林多教会说:“我在你们那里,又软弱,又惧怕,又甚战兢。” (林前2:3)但神赐给教会软弱的肢体,他要在软弱的人身上显出他的大能来。14:1要求说:“信心软弱的,你们要接纳,但不要辩论所疑惑的事。” 理由是:“因为神已经收纳他了。” 没错他软弱,但请别忘了他与我们一般,蒙神赐给1-11章所有那“测不透的丰富”,他与我们,同是蒙恩的。

在十五章教导的伸延中,保罗说:因为我们在基督里互为肢体,刚强的人不但不要被动地躲埋怨,而是主动恒久不断地(原文)为不坚固的人担代。“ 我们坚固的人,应该担代不坚固人的软弱,不求自己的喜悦。”(1)躲与埋怨是一种求自己满足的表现,而教会中“坚固的人”(保罗使用第一人称众数 “我们” ,把他自己也囊括到 “坚固的人” 当中)的使命,不是躲,而是主动地因不断叫我们软弱的弟兄姊妹喜悦而得益处,目的是 “使他得益处,建立德行”。(2)( “德行” 原文的字根是“家”,建立德行于是可理解为“建立(基督的)家。”)

“担代”是救主基督的样式。我们是“不坚固人”吗?软弱吗?当然。保罗高举救主基督,在我们不坚固、软弱的时候,基督躲了吗?没有;他求自己的喜悦了吗?没有。反倒是,他以万有创造者之尊,虚己,取了人的样式,来到地上受苦受死。我们“不求自己的喜悦……务要叫邻舍喜悦”的根据是,“因为基督也不求自己的喜悦”,为我们的软弱他把自己献上,“如经上所记,辱骂你人的辱骂,都落在我身上” (诗69:9),让我们脱离十字架的刑罚,在他里面变为刚强。

那么基督徒都应是整日价苦哈哈的吗?因为“不求自己的喜悦”,还让人活不让?好说,神的灵是喜乐的灵(加5:23),问题是,我们当怎样追求喜乐(悦)。

“求喜悦”有两种求法。林前7:32-34三节经文中,三次使用与罗15:1“求……喜悦” 相同的用词avre,skw (aresko) 。第一种求喜悦是,是求主的喜悦:“没有娶妻的,是为主的事挂虑,想怎样叫主喜悦”(林前7:32),我们也因为主喜悦而与神的灵产生共鸣,从而与神一同喜悦,这是属天的喜悦。还有一种求喜悦的方法,保罗指出,是求人的喜悦:“娶了妻的,是为世上的事挂虑,想怎样叫妻子喜悦……已经出嫁的,是为世上的事挂虑,想怎样叫丈夫喜悦。” (林前7:33-34)保罗接着说,他分析这两种不同的求喜悦,“是为你们的益处”,上好的喜悦(益处)求自 “你们行合宜的事,得以殷勤服事主。”(林前7:36)

现在我们明白,与“刚强的人”们密切过从,不消说是大喜悦,圣徒间彼此分享代祷互相劝勉当然是属灵的赏心乐事。不过,保罗鼓励 “我们刚强的人” 不求这种锦上添花的喜乐,“合宜的事”是,以 “担代不坚固人的软弱”,为他们雪中送炭,以“不求自己的喜悦”,让别人从我们看见基督的风范。这样,把教会建立起来,这就是“福音”(罗1:15):“收割的人得工价,积蓄五谷到永生。叫撒种的和收割的一同快乐。”(约4:36)我们所追求的,是从求神的喜悦当中,自己也得到因为神的喜悦而喜悦。这是我们对1-11章恩典的回应:我们作活祭去求取赐恩典的神的喜悦。

祭物要经火。死牛羊还好,“不怕开水烫“;活祭也要活着经火,是圣灵的火,烧去世俗的瘢痕,炼成纯净的精金。好受吗?未必。你要为他人担代,有可能别人觉得你“怎么啦”。但别丧气,保罗让我们把担代,交给“赐忍耐安慰的神”。疫情泛滥、社会动荡,因此教会人数减少,盛况似乎不再……这些都是可能叫我们躲或埋怨的,不过,我们不躲不埋怨,反倒互相担代,叫我们的弟兄姊妹邻舍喜悦。如此,神必“叫你们彼此同心,效法基督耶稣,一心一口,荣耀神,我们主耶稣基督的父。”(5-6)躲什么躲?主耶稣说,我们在世上有苦难。但不必躲,也不必埋怨,因为他 “已经胜了世界。”(约16:33)既然因为主我们“得胜有余”(8:37),还用得着躲吗?

作为基督耶稣的忠仆,保罗有一句名言:“我立了志向,不在基督的名被称过的地方传福音,免得建造在别人的根基上。”(20)听起来,保罗好像有点儿anti-social? 完全不是。这正反映了保罗顺服基督的心志。

在12:3开始,他有“合乎中道”的教导。他知道主把不同的恩赐分给各人,让“我们这许多人,在基督里成为一身,互相联络作肢体。”(12:5)保罗正是沿袭这认知,顺服基督的带领去计划他的宣道之旅。逻辑是:

  1. 他的志向,只在基督的名不曾被尊崇的地方传福音
  2. 在这些地方传福音,有可靠的圣经根据,去之可也(21)
  3. 这些地方必定是没有任何别人建造过福音根基之处,这样计划差传之旅,与他的领受(12:3ff)不会有矛盾
  4. 如此,神所差派的其他传道人(如亚波罗、传福音的腓利等等),也因他们的中心得着神的赏赐(说到这里,我个人越发相信那卷新约的奇花异卉,那卷神笔妙曼的不世巨著《希伯来书》,作者似是那位 “生在亚力山太,是有学问的,最能讲解圣经“ 的犹太人亚波罗。不赘。)

现在就可以明白他为何在1:13说,“我屡次定意往你们那里去……只是到如今仍有阻隔。” 他没有马上说明是什么阻隔。但藉着15章的叙述我们看到,是他自己的差传策略使然。既然罗马已经建立起教会,那就已经是“基督的名被称过的地方”了,也就不在他宣道的优先次序上。不过,既然年幼的罗马教会存在许多的问题需要指引,他深知他欠着福音的债,于是写下了这一卷光辉灿烂的巨著《罗马书》,“情愿尽我的力量,将福音也传给你们在罗马的人。”(1:14-15)

神兴起他的仆人教导、作育教会二千年,灯台不灭,薪火相传。“饥渴慕义的人有福了,因为他们必得饱足。” (太5:6)救主耶稣基督如此应许说。            —- David Yip

羅馬書14:1-23

豬血糕是台灣一個有名的小吃,糯米攪和上豬血,切成條狀,串上竹籤,蒸完後沾上醬料或是花生粉後一根一根的賣。我從小都挺喜歡的,一直到現在也是。

之前有一次在和太太和岳母聊天的時候提到了類似豬血糕的食物,當時岳母說她自從成為基督徒後就不吃血了,因為聖經上有這樣的教導,內地的牧者們也是這樣教導信徒的。我當時不太能夠理解,因為我從小就沒有被阻止過這件事,也沒聽說過類似的教導。這件事過了後也就不了了之,因為我覺得沒有必要為了這種事而去爭論或是要去證明自己是對的,別人是錯的。

提到這件事主要也只是因為這段經文直接地提到了吃,而我剛好恰巧有類似的經驗。但大家都知道,這段經文主要帶出來的信息不僅僅是限於吃或不吃肉,而是在提醒信徒們為了做一件事情是否能夠心裡平安,是否能夠不犯罪,而且不會對不起神的重要性。這樣的教導可以被延伸且應用到教會生活中的其他各個方面。

拿敬拜來說,不同的教會會用不同的方式來敬拜。在美國黑人教會,基督徒們用輕快的節奏,華麗的伴奏,多樣的樂器,熱情的律動,拍手擊掌大聲讚美神。但同時在一些教會,敬拜只用一台鋼琴,甚至不用樂器,只有人聲來敬拜。兩者誰才是用正確的方式在敬拜呢?誰才是對的呢?我相信最重要的是會眾是否有敬拜的心,是否當下真是在敬拜神。大家是為了音樂而唱歌,還是為了怕壞了規矩而只用人聲?我記得牧師師母有分享過一次去內地宣教的經驗,提到說當時的司琴彈的調和大家唱的完全不一樣。但是就算如此,在人擠人,悶熱狹窄的小教會裡,會眾們都是毫不保留的大聲敬拜讚美神。反觀到許多美國的華人教會,在環境舒適,音樂水平更高的狀況之下反倒是沒有什麼敬拜的聲音。我相信方式並不是最重要的,重要的是我們是否打從心底就真是想要去敬拜,畢竟我們所做的一切,我們心懷意念都是要在神面前交帳的。「這樣看來,我們各人必要將自己的事在神面前說明。」- 12節。

我認為,在確保真理和救恩的核心是保存下來的狀況之下,與其去比較什麼方式或是想法比其他來得更好,還去和別人辯論並想說服別人接受你的想法,倒不如把這個時間和精力放在更重要的事情上面。像是花更多時間去省察自己有什麼需要悔改,需要神來光照的地方。又或是去關心身邊的弟兄姊妹或是慕道友,去彼此鼓勵代禱或是分享見證和廣傳福音。

生活在這個墮落的世界中,人與人之間已經太多矛盾,太多不同意見,太多爭論,太多我對你錯,我們很難在日常生活中去避免這樣的事情。但身為基督徒,讓我們把這樣的事情放在教會外面,讓教會成為一個敬拜神,學習神的話語,感受到神的恩典,福音可以被傳播,弟兄姊妹們能互相鼓勵和禱告,並同時有夠體驗到神的愛的一個地方。 越是在末世的混亂裡,基督徒們就更應該要避免分黨結派,反倒應該是去凝聚在一起,為著教會的復興,喪失的靈魂而去打那美好的仗。「所以,我們務要追求和睦的事與彼此建立德行的事。」- 19節           —- Bob Liu

Romans 12:1-21

Consider God’s mercy upon us: we who were bound in sin and headed for eternal death are now reversed- Jesus saved us from the bondage of sin and we are now headed for heaven. In light of this, we are called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. No longer are we to indulge in our fleshly desires.
But how do we overcome these desires for we live in an environment where we are constantly bombarded by worldly pressure?
We must guard our minds, for it is the controlling tower of our behaviors. Soaking our minds in the Word of God is paramount to our victory over the pull of this world. When we understand the Word of God, we are able to discern His will for us- His good, pleasing and perfect will.

On serving God with the capacities he granted us, we must be careful not to be conceited. We must recognize that we are part of the body of Christ. Each of us are endowed with varying gifts and we need each other to function as a body. When each of us fulfill our calling, the body of Christ (church) is built up and God is glorified.

To love others sincerely does not come naturally for most, for we are selfish creatures by nature. We all have our agendas and motives to fulfill. It is no wonder our love for others is wrapped with hypocrisy. To live out the kind of love God requires from us, it would be helpful to let 1Cor 13:4-7 sink in us on a regular basis.
Part of love is to be able to recognize what is evil and to detest it, so much so that we will make an effort to help others to get out of it. It is like warning someone about a trap that was laid out for him, so as to prevent him from falling into it, or it could be sharing God’s truth with an idol worshiper or a homosexual, because we care about their eternal life. Love is an investment that takes time, energy and sometimes money.

Are we willing to invest in love? What is our priority? Pray that God will help us to love those whom He puts in our path.

And not to repay anyone evil for evil? Does that mean Christians get stepped all over by bullies?
We may feel that way, but we are called to live at peace as best as we possibly can and to leave room for God’s wrath for it is His to avenge. That doesn’t mean we forgo our desire for justice to be served. We just let God do it for us- in the form of government, etc.
When they hurled their insults at Him (Jesus), He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.”- 1 Peter 2:23. In the midst of our persecution we can speak up just as Jesus did with the high priest and council of Pharisees, but we must learn from Jesus not to retaliate. This is difficult for many of us who want justice to be served swiftly especially when it concerns us. We must look to God to help us rely on Him and forgive those who have hurt us. God is a just God, He will surely take up the cause of His people.

 

Romans 13:1-14

We are all subject to some authorities in our lives. Since authorities are put in place by God, we will do well when we obey them. Punishment is well deserved when we break the law or rebel against authorities. These authorities deserved payment, respect and honor.
What happens when the authorities are evil, corrupted and they prohibit us to recognize our God or interfere with our moral conscience?
It has been a struggle for some Christians especially because obeying the authorities means living against their moral conscience. Christians who have the power to vote, ought to vote for godly biblical leaders. Godly leaders help to set the stage and directions of the people. May God sustain and deliver those who are being persecuted because of their faith.

Finally, we are once again called to love. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is the fulfillment of the law as given in the last five parts of the Ten Commandments. We are to be especially alert as the time draws near for Jesus’ return. We certainly do not want to be caught in the lifestyle of Jeffrey Epstein or Ghislane Maxwell. Let’s encourage one another to live for Christ, for when Christ returns, we will not be caught off guard.           —- Lai Yee Leong
