Psalms 97:1-12; 2 Chronicles 10:1-19

Psalms 97:1-12

Key verse:  The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory. (Psalms 97:6)

Psalm 97 is praising the kingship of our LORD; for His righteousness and glory, we rejoice.  How do our lips and lives agree on His kingship and be joyous? In Matthew 6, we have a life application instructed by Jesus:

(Matthew 6:33) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

We may have hundreds of millions of legitimate ways to seek his kingdom and his righteousness. But they all need a starting point – as a Christian, do I recognize (seek) the kingship and lordship of Christ in my life? Who sits on the throne of my heart? Do the burdens of pride, pretense, and artificiality still bother us and make us self-righteousness that forbids our hearts to sing this praise?

Living for Jesus| Thomas O. Chisholm (1st Verse)
Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
  Striving to please Him in all that I do;
  Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.
Refrain:
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
  For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me;
  I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne;
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.

2 Chronicles 10:1-19 About Kingship

Key verse: So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite. (2 Chronicles 10:15)

2 Chronicles 10 is the record of Israel rebelling against Rehoboam. With the help from the details in 1 Kings 11, we understand that the rising of Jeroboam and the rebel of Israel did not come from nowhere, but the fulfillment of the prophecy.  King Solomon tried to protect his son’s kingship by attempting to kill this future opponent upon learning about the prophecy (but not learning from his own mistake). Rehoboam managed to flee to Egypt and after King Solomon died, he was welcomed back by the Israelites.  When the young and inexperienced king Rehoboam enthroned, he did another disservice to his own kingship by listening to the bad advice, further fueled the tension that empowered Jeroboam.  Men’s own effort to retain the power ended up with losing it fast; God’s purpose and plan will not be thwarted.

Prayer:

Lord, all glory and mighty power go to you. Please help us to submit to you without holding back, help us to lead our lives in the way you want.  May your kingdom come.  In the name of Christ we pray,  Amen. —- Ivy Lin

—- Scott Mo

2 Chronicles 8:1-18

Chapter 8 recorded the expansion of King Solomon’s influence to the region. However, it also subtly recorded the turning point of King Solomon’s spiritual deterioration.

  1. (1-6) Solomon dominated over the region. He continued to build store cities for his army. He forgot God’s word in Deuteronomy 12:16, God spoke specifically to the future Kings of Israel that he shall not multiply horses for himself.
Are we looking at the Dow Jones Index more than the words of God? Do we invest more time in God’s word than the Wall Street Journal?
  2. (7-10) Solomon dominated the gentiles. He raised gentile as force labor and the Israelites as rulers over them.
As believers, we should use our privileges to share God’s love with non- believers. As parents, we also labor ourselves raising children to know Christ, so that they would not depart from God when they are old.
  3. (11) Solomon made an unwise decision when he married Pharaoh’s daughter and many other wives. It led to his spiritual downfall. His heathen wives brought their gods to the holy city. He also admitted that his wife from Egypt is not holy and cannot live in the holy city. He did it anyway to gain political capital. From 1 Kings 11:1-2, we see that King Solomon, however, loved other foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter, including Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites. They were from nations that the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.”
It is sad to see a husband or wife cannot accompany their spouse in the holy place/ church to worship our Holy God. May God have mercy on us. Let us labor in our marriage and salvation of our spouse so that families can worship God together.
  4. (12-16) Solomon followed the offerings, priest’s responsibilities and gatekeepers according to the Law.
Do we serve God in an orderly manner? Are we too causal in our services to God?
  5. (17-18) Solomon partnered with Hiram, Tyrian’s king to do sea trading. Jews did not have the nautical skill and had to partner with Hiram who furnished him with expert sailors to explore trading beyond the promised land.
As we work with non-believers, aren’t we influencing them through our work ethic or are we being drifted away from godly principles by their disbelief?

  听命胜于献祭;

—- Sandy Xu

—- Ivan Ho

Psalms 96:1-13; 2 Chronicles 3:1-17

Psalms 96:1-13

Key verse: Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.  (Psalms 96:7)

The background of Psalms 96 probably could be traced back to 1 Chronicles 15-16, when David brought the Ark back to Jerusalem, as similar verses found from 1 Chronicles 16:23-33. It is a public worship psalm for praises and celebration.  It involves all the people of God:
  Singing praises to Him
  Testifying His greatness/goodness
  Exalting Him
  Offering to Him
  Rejoicing in Him
  Expecting His return

The first recorded occasion of Psalms 96 was full of joy and splendor. After that, it might be sung many times in public throughout the history of Israel as the Israelites contemplated their circumstances of being scattered and gathered multiple times versus this remote glorious moment.
This very psalm could also have been sung at our church or many worship events during our walks with God.
May we all have a renewed heart and cherish every moment of our lives for honoring and worshiping Him.

2 Chronicles 3:1-17

2 Chronicles 3-5 could be read together with 1 Kings 6-8, as both documented the beginning of building the temple and the glory of the Lord filled the temple during dedication.

2 Chronicles 3 has the record of its ground breaking event:
  Designated place (v1)
  Designated time (v2)
  Designated plan in specifics (v3-17)

Very detailed and very seriously the work of the temple started.  As we reflect, it pointed to God’s plan of salvation, the work of Jesus, which is very detailed and seriously fulfilled.

While we are progressing into the New Testament, these scriptures of sacred places, days, rituals, and detailed instructions of the temple still teach us and help us to understand that He is Holy (and we should be too). We should also be reminded that now that we have the High Priest pleading for us, the conversation between Jesus and Samaritan woman (John 4:21-24) becomes so relevant to us as we are trying to identify the center of our faith:

John 4:21-24
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.  You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Prayer:

Lord, our hearts tremble for Thy greatness and holiness, help us to understand Thy Word and let it dwell in us as truth without the veil.  Make the place of Thy feet glorious, and then shall our hearts truly be transformed into worshiping and loving ones that please you. In the name of Christ Jesus we pray, Amen.              —- Ivy Lin

— Scott Mo

1 Chronicle 29:1-30

This final chapter of 1st Chronicles concluded the life of King David. He is remembered as a man who enjoyed long life, wealth, and honor. The legacy he left to his son wasn’t just the wealth and kingship. He laid out a master plan for his son, Solomon to build the Holy temple, a worship center for all Israelites to worship God.

What kind of legacy do we want to pass to our children and grandchildren?  How do you want your children and grandchildren remember you? King David is remembered as a man after God’s own heart, “He will do everything I (God) want him to do.”- Acts 13:22.  Even though King David is imperfect in many ways, God’s grace can overcome his imperfections. Every parent makes mistakes and sometimes, we make big mistakes. But God redeems us from them.

His prayer from verses 10-20 gives us a good lesson. Everything comes from God. Wealth, talent, health …etc. all come from God. One of the major obstacles for most Christians is to give tithes to the Church because they mismanage their money. They may be in heavy debts. *. Let us start organizing our financial and spiritual lives so that we can contribute and help grow God’s kingdom without bondage.             —- Alan Yam

( 代上 22:20 )     —- Sandy Xu
