— Ivan Ho
Who is good? Who is bad? Jonah thought God was kidding and he wanted to quit. Deserter? Patriot? Jonah wanted to flee. Flee from love. Flee from care. What is right? What is wrong? Jonah thought God was kidding and he wanted to quit.
Set sail to Tarshish. He said ‘I am finished’. He would rather die than love his enemies. Forgiving is lovely until you have someone to forgive. God chased him with the wind. The ship sinks and he still sleeps. He said, ‘God take me. I am ready to quit.’ One, two and three, sailors tossed him into the big sea. Jonah was ready to quit.
Is it God’s punishment? Is it God’s salvation? Why would God rescue me? Why would God not put me to death? A runaway child who wanted to play hide and seek. A prophet? A prisoner of hate?
Engulfed by big fish? Engulfed by Big God? He cooled his head. He made a vow, He would make good. Salvation comes from the Lord. God straightens out a fleeing prophet. — Alan Yam
— Solomon Liu
Prophet Daniel was at his eighties when he prayed for God’s will regarding the nation of Israel. His prayer concerned about the Jews’ failure to fulfill their responsibilities (returned and rebuilt Jerusalem and the temple). His answer to his prayer was delayed as the angel Gabriel was at war with the devils trying to intercept the message. Michael, the archangel came to recuse and the message was finally delivered after three weeks. God answered Daniel with one of the greatest prophecy in the entire Bible (read chapter 11)
Gabriel told Daniel that from the moment he had begum to pray, his words had been heard in heaven. As Paul says: “ We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities against powers, against he rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places” Ephesians 6:12.
One important lesson I learn from Daniel 10 is God’s delay does not mean God’s denial. We are easily discourage when our prayer seem unanswered. Jesus encourages us to pray and not lose heart Luke 18:1, and Paul told us to pray with all perseverance, Ephesian 6:18. God always listen to our prayer.
Sometimes, I think that it does not sound “manly” to pray when we face problems. I tend to find ways to solve problems instead of praying. However, Christians are in a spiritual warfare. Satan has the power to delay God’s message. Satan also uses ways to distract us from asking for God’s help. As we pray, God send his army of angels to fight for us. Prayer is a “manly” way to deal with our problem(s). — Alan Yam
