2 Chronicles 21:1-20
The life of King Jehoram is a sad tragedy. He comes not only from the line of David, but his father Jehoshaphat and grandfather Asa who ruled before him where men who loved the Lord. Yet both of these forefathers made alliances with the enemies of God, decisions that brought consequences to their children. Asa made a momentary alliance with other nations rather than seeking the hand of God. And Jehoshaphat, who was once quick to call on God, sought to make long lasting relationships with those who did not love God or walk in His ways. It was this same tendency that Jehoram inherited from his fathers. And this was what lead him astray and to his destruction.
God has called each church, each family, and all believers to make disciples. He has given us the responsibility to raise up spiritual children and to teach them to teach others what God has taught us. Throughout Scripture from Abraham to Moses to Paul and Timothy, God has called his people to guide the path of the next generation. Jehoshaphat lead his son to his doom by finding him a bride from the house of Ahab. Our daily walk will be watched by our disciples, whether those are the youth of the church, those whom we disciple, or our family. We must be careful that the path of our feet doesn’t not bring destruction on the next generations. Jehoshaphat’s example shows us that we cannot tolerate compromise with sin in our own lives. Our walk and our heart must not be given half-hearted to God. But we must seek Him first, His Kingdom, His righteousness. Our obedience today will bless our children tomorrow. —- Nathan Williams
