Deuteronomy 29:1-29
God’s Covenant with the children of Israel
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law”
I thought it would be interesting to look into the basic elements of a contract and then follow through the verses from this chapter. Not necessarily in in the numbered verses, but we and find them included in this writing.
In a contract today, you will find an opening statement, a legal purpose, mutual acceptance, consideration, voluntary acceptance (or at will), and competent parties
v1: These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel . . . opening statement
v9: Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do. . . purpose
v12: You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant the Lord is making with you this day. . . acceptance
v13: to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you. . . consideration
v2: Moses summoned all the children of Israel and spoke to them . . . voluntary acceptance or at will
v16: You yourselves know . . competent parties
Beginning with verse 16 it is all detailed so they will know and understand
non compos mentis
All throughout the book of Deuteronomy we are reminded of God’s “contract” with his people and the difficulty in keeping His terms
Thanks be to God that today, Jesus stepped in on our behalf and completed or fulfilled for us
For God so loved (opening statement) us (competent parties) the he gave his one and only son (purpose) that whoever believes (voluntary acceptance) in him shall not perish (consideration) but have eternal life
